Two Different Approaches to Land Clearing
When you need land cleared, you generally have two main options: forestry mulching or bulldozing. Both get the job done, but they work in fundamentally different ways and are suited for different situations.
Forestry Mulching
A forestry mulcher is a single machine with a rotating drum or disc equipped with cutting teeth. It grinds standing trees, brush, and stumps into mulch in one pass.
Pros:
- Lower cost for most projects (one machine vs. multiple)
- No hauling — mulch stays on-site as ground cover
- Minimal soil disturbance and erosion
- Can selectively clear (keep certain trees)
- No burn permits needed
- Faster for light to medium clearing
Cons:
- Limited on very large timber (typically 12"+ diameter)
- Not ideal if you need the root ball removed
- Leaves a mulch layer that may not suit all uses
Bulldozing
Traditional clearing with a bulldozer pushes trees over, rips stumps out of the ground, and piles debris for burning or hauling.
Pros:
- Handles any size timber
- Removes root balls completely
- Leaves bare dirt ready for grading
- Better for sites that need complete soil prep
Cons:
- Significant soil disturbance and erosion risk
- Requires hauling debris off-site or burning
- Multiple machines needed (dozer, excavator, trucks)
- Higher cost for most projects
- Cannot selectively clear
Cost Comparison
For a typical 5-acre clearing project with medium-density brush and trees:
- Forestry Mulching: $7,500 - $12,500
- Bulldozing + Hauling: $12,000 - $25,000
Which Should You Choose?
Choose forestry mulching when: you want to keep topsoil intact, need selective clearing, have light to medium vegetation, or want to minimize erosion (great for slopes and areas near water).
Choose bulldozing when: you need complete stump and root removal for building foundations, have very large timber, or need the site brought to bare dirt for construction grading.
Many contractors offer both services and can recommend the best approach after seeing your property.
